The first National Donut Day started in 1938 as a fundraiser to help the needy during the Great Depression and to honor the Salvation Army female volunteers of World War I, who
served donuts to soldiers. Due to the difficulties of providing fresh baked goods to the soldiers fighting World War I, two Salavation Army volunteers came up with the idea of
providing donuts. It was reported that they were an “instant hit”.
In honor of National Donut Day, Zehnder’s Bakery will be offering a free “Yeast-Raised Glazed Donut” to the first 300 customers in the Foodstore on Friday, June 6, 2014. Hope to see you there!
