Cigars, you either love them or hate them! But…over the years cigars have played a prominent role in the history of Zehnder’s Restaurant.
The slowest day ever recorded at Zehnder’s Restaurant was back in the depths of the Great Depression when total receipts amounted to one five cent Speckled Sport brand cigar purchased by local businessman Fred Gottsinger who sat in the Tap Room and smoked it down to the butt. Many of the old time photos of Zehnder’s feature mustachioed cigar smoking men in the Tap Room and the dining rooms – unheard of today!
Cigar dinners at Zehnder’s dates back many decades; a relaxing evening of good cigars, special drinks and great food. Times change, habits change and today cigar smoking is pretty much relegated to outdoor activities, especially golf where many golfers still like to puff on a good “stogie” out on the course.
Every fall, The Fortress hosts The Cigar Golf Classic, coming up on October 4th, a nostalgic event where premium cigars and a great dinner are still the center of attraction. The theme for 2012 is “Home on the Range” – a salute to all things “cowboy”. Kind of a natural – cowboys and cigars, ala Clint Eastwood. If you’re a “foodie” and watch all of the cooking shows on TV, you know that ribeye steaks are “IN” with all the celebrity chefs. Well, we’re taking it further and offering an ultimate ribeye steak – a full pound and a half ribeye, bone-in. The most succulent and flavorful steak, flame seared and cooked to perfection. THE steak of culinary legends and ultra high end steak houses. Along with our steak, we’ll feature fajitas, smoked western sausages, Spanish rice, baked potato bar and three special salads.
If you have any room left, we top it all off with pecan pie and chocolate cake. The cost is $96 per person and includes golf with cart, dinner and premium cigars. Want to join in but don’t golf? Dinner only guests are $55.
