Zehnder’s Scores Top Honors in American Culinary Federation’s Annual Hot Food Competition

On January 26th, Zehnder’s played host to the American Culinary Federation Professional Chefs 23rd Annual Hot Food Competition. Culinary students and local chefs competed in the finale event of Zehnder’s Snowfest within 4 categories – Beef, Poultry, Pork and Pastry featuring a tropical theme “Cruisin’ the Caribbean – a Culinary Salute to Tropical Island Cuisine”. All proceeds benefitted the Saginaw East Side Soup Kitchen After School Program.

Spectators enjoyed tropical favorites such as Whole Roasted Pig, Trinidad Pigeon Peas and
Rice with Shrimp, Jamaican Jerk Chicken, Coconut Shrimp, Tobago Goat Curry and much more.

The top awards went to:

Beef Category:
1st Place – Chef Jason Goss from Caretel Inn of America with “Cuban Style Ropa Vieja”

2nd Place – Chef Brandon Reeve and Jennifer Lannin from Zehnder’s Bakery with “Shrimp and Ginger Braised Oxtails with Curried Sweet Potatoes”

3rd Place – Chef Mary Jo Appel from Marlette Regional Hospital with “Caribbean Beef Oxtail Dumpling Soup with Grilled Bananas on Coco Bread”

Poultry Category:
1st Place – Chef Lena Jencic, private chef with “Chicken Pastelon”

2nd Place – Chefs Jacob and Marie Austin from the Golden Glow Ballroom with “Classic
Jamaican Chicken Brown Stew”

3rd Place – Chef Lance Buchinger from Zehnder’s Restaurant with “Bajan Chicken”

Pork Category:
1st Place – Chef Ernie LeClair from Zehnder’s Restaurant with “Coco ‘Jerk Butt’ Sandwich

2nd Place – Chef Aaron Gaertner from Saginaw Career Complex with “Cuban Cerdo Ropa Vieja with Maduros and Frijoles del Cordon

3rd Place – Chef Travis Ringler from Morrison Senior Dining Center with “Jerk Sticky Ribs
with Mango and Papaya Salsa

Pastry Category:
1st Place – Chefs Brandon Reeve and Jennifer Lannin from Zehnder’s Bakery with “Shrimp and Ginger Braised Oxtails with Curried Sweet Potatoes
