Fall is here, which means it’s time to mark your calendars for Zehnder’s Annual Squashtoberfest on Monday, October 28th from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. So what is Squashtoberfest? It’s Zehnder’s autumn celebration in honor of all things squash and pumpkin. In conjunction with Pioneer Sugar, WSGW Radio, & Tomac Pumpkin Patch, Zehnder’s proudly hosts a one-of–a-kind quirky competition. It’s an all day three-event cooking competition where we invite all home cooks, aspiring amateur chefs and TV Food Network “foodies” to submit their favorite squash/pumpkin recipes and pit their culinary skills against other squash aficionados for cash and prizes.
There are three categories ….soup, savory main dishes and sweet desserts. You can enter one or more categories with your favorite recipe that has a main ingredient of squash or pumpkin.
What exactly qualifies as a squash or pumpkin??? Any member of the gourd family qualifies. This includes summer varieties with thin skins and edible seeds like zucchini and yellow crookneck squash plus winter squash varieties with hard skins and hard shell seeds. Included in the winter category is butternut, hubbard, buttercup, spaghetti, patty pan, to name just a few. Click here for official entry form and rules.
If you don’t want to compete, just come for all or part of the day to see what the excitement is all about. We start at 9 a.m. with the Soup Category and then move on to the Savory and finish up with the Sweet Deserts. We will have demonstrations, guest speakers, door prize drawings along with the opportunity to vote for your favorite jam, jelly or preserve. Admission is FREE!
