It’s Squash Season at Zehnder’s!
Fall is here, which means it’s time to mark your calendars for Zehnder’s Annual Squashtoberfest on Monday, October 28th from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. So what is Squashtoberfest? It’s Zehnder’s autumn celebration in honor of all things squash and pumpkin. In conjunction with Pioneer Sugar, WSGW Radio, & Tomac Pumpkin Patch, Zehnder’s proudly hosts a one-of–a-kind quirky competition. It’s an all day, three-event cooking competition where we invite all home cooks, aspiring amateur chefs and TV Food Network “foodies” to submit their favorite squash/pumpkin recipes and pit their culinary skills against other squash aficionados for cash and prizes.
There are three categories ….soup, savory main dishes and sweet deserts. You can enter one or more categories with your favorite recipe that has a main ingredient of squash or pumpkin.
What exactly qualifies as a squash or pumpkin??? Any member of the gourd family qualifies. This includes summer varieties with think skins and edible seeds like zucchini and yellow crookneck squash plus winter squash varieties with hard skins and hard shell seeds. Included in the winter category is butternut, hubbard, buttercup, spaghetti and patty pan, to name just a few. Click here for an official entry form and rules.
If you don’t want to compete, just come for all or part of the day to see what the excitement is all about. We start at 9 a.m. with the Soup Category and then move on to the Savory and finish up with the Sweet Desserts. Also, back for the second year is “The Patti LaLonde Future Culinary Stars High School Competition” where high school culinary arts student teams compete to honor Patti LaLonde, long time food writer. The Bay, Saginaw and Tuscola Vocational Culinary Arts Program will be participating and will be judged on the best Cake, Pound Bread and Pie with squash/pumpkin as the main ingredient which starts at 10:30 a.m. We will have demonstrations, guest speakers and door prize drawings along with the opportunity to vote for your favorite jam, jelly or preserve.
