Let the Classes Begin!

By Al Zehnder, CEO of Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth

[PHOTOS] The concept of starting a culinary education program for our team has been an ongoing discussion at Zehnder’s. While we’ve sent many of our culinary staff to hundreds of hours of classes and seminars, we’ve always wanted to do our own thing right here. There’s nothing like all learning the same thing at the same time with people on your team.

Organized by our VP of Human Resources, Susan Zehnder and under the guidance of our Certified Master Chef John Zehnder we have partnered with Chef Andy Mikuszewski as our lead culinary educator. Chef Andy is a classically trained chef with a degree from the Culinary Institute of America and an MS from the University of Massachusetts – Amherst. Formerly the Corporate Chef for Stouffers and Nestle, Chef Andy has spent his life in the culinary arts on a corporate, individual restaurant and educational level. Chef Andy previously taught at the University of Akron and is now an Associate Professor at TRI-C Community College in Cleveland, Ohio.

The first set of classes beginning June 1st, will be attended by eight of our current team. Graduates, having successfully completed both the class requirements and the practical exam will receive certification through the American Culinary Federation as a Certified Culinarian and some will receive their CSC or Certified Sous Chef designation. The American Culinary Federation provides fourteen different certification designations within five unique disciplines each requiring specific qualifications. As time goes on we plan on providing additional classes leading to advanced culinary certifications for our staff. Future classes will be offered to team members that have shown the commitment and interest in developing their skills, all at no cost to them.

One element of our Mission Statement requires us to be the “employer of choice”. To us that means attracting, retaining and providing no cost education to those employees on our staff that want to make Zehnder’s and the hospitality industry their career.

If you’re considering a career in the hospitality industry, have a conversation with us. Your education is waiting for you.

Hospitably Yours,

Al Zehnder, CEO of Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth
