By Al Zehnder, CEO of Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth
I can just imagine the excitement and anticipation of my family and Grandparents on Saturday May 11, 1929. Just a few months earlier, William and Emilie Zehnder had sold the family farm, borrowed $4,000 and purchased the New Exchange Hotel. After an extensive remodel of the interior and exterior, the family moved in. Their business was also their home. Their new adventure in the restaurant business was about to begin.
The name was changed to Zehnder’s Hotel and the doors were opened for business on Mother’s Day, Sunday May 12th, 1929. The whole family pitched in and a total of 312 guests were served family style for $1.00 a person.
Since then Zehnder’s has served millions of mothers from around the world. The daily anticipation and excitement is as evident today as it was 92 years ago.
If you need a place to make mom feel special, we have your table waiting. From my family to yours, Happy Mother’s Day!
