This year, Squashtoberfest falls on the 28th of October. Whenever I talk about Squashtoberfest, I’m reminded of the Seinfeld TV episodes where George Costanza celebrates Festivus. That’s because when I say “Squashtoberfest” people look at me in a strange way. But…it’s a real event – a cooking contest where the best amateur cooks and bakers in the area face off preparing unique and original squash and pumpkin recipes.
What better way to celebrate autumn than with all things squash and pumpkin?
We’ll start the day with “The Great Soup Challenge” at 9 a.m. followed by the “Savory Main Dish” category and finally finish up with the dessert category “Sweet Surprises” ending at 2 p.m. Any type of squash may be used. Both summer and winter varieties show up in the recipes of our competitors. From my perspective as a chef, I love to see the creativity and passion each of our amateur cooks puts into their creations.
We cordially invite you to attend and be a part of the action. Once judged, you will be able to taste all of the dishes. We’ll have printed recipe hand-outs from all of the competitors so you can recreate any and all of the recipes at home.
WSGW Radio personalities Art Lewis and Sue Smith will be on hand to join in the celebration plus there will be demonstrations and other activities going on while our cooks are busily preparing their masterpieces.
In addition to WSGW, we’re proud to have Pioneer Sugar as a sponsor.
Pioneer Sugar has been a part of Squashtoberfest from the beginning.
If you’re interested in entering Squashtoberfest, you still have time.
