In 1950, the Zehnder family purchased Fischer’s Hotel, just across the street from Zehnder’s; William “Tiny” Zehnder, Jr. was named manager. After a few years operating as Fischer’s, the family agreed with Tiny that if they differentiated the two properties architecturally, they wouldn’t be competing so directly. A building committee consisting of Fred, Tiny and Herman Zehnder was formed and were authorized to hire an architect.

By March of 1958, Fred Zehnder then President of the company, reported back on behalf of the committee that the new design for the addition to Fischer’s Hotel had been agreed upon and that it would be Bavarian.

The 1959 grand opening celebration of the Bavarian Inn addition, was the beginning of The Frankenmuth Bavarian Festival. By 1962, the success of the annual celebration was too much for the Zehnder family to manage and a local volunteer organization, the Civics Events Council, was formed to manage the annual event. By 1970, the event outgrew the downtown area and the decision was made to move the festival to Heritage Park.

In 2016, the leadership of the Civics Events Council, approached various service clubs, downtown business and the Frankenmuth Chamber/CVB with the idea to bring the festival back to its downtown Frankenmuth roots.

In full support of this move, the Zehnder Corporation offered Zehnder Park, just south of our flagship restaurant, as the location for the main entertainment tent. The 2017 Bavarian Festival excitement begins in downtown Frankenmuth on June 8 and is capped off on June 11 with the annual Bavarian Festival Parade. A variety of entertainment tents, German food venues, a kids parade and fireworks on Saturday night are sure to make this move a fun, family oriented addition to downtown Frankenmuth. The full schedule of events and activities can be seen at www.bavarianfestival.org.

We are excited to welcome the Frankenmuth Bavarian Festival back to downtown Frankenmuth.

Hospitably Yours,

Al Zehnder, CEO

Zehnder’s Early Lodging History http://www.zehnders.com/zehnders-early-lodging-history/ http://www.zehnders.com/zehnders-early-lodging-history/#respond Mon, 27 Mar 2017 17:23:40 +0000 http://www.zehnders.com/?p=7864 Pictured above: Family friend and long time resident of Zehnder’s; Carl Knieling.

By Al Zehnder, CEO of Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth
During the 1930’s, Frankenmuth was a common stop for transients; single men looking for work. My grandmother, Emilie Bickel Zehnder, was never one to turn away an empty stomach and often enough these men were willing to work in exchange for a hot meal and a dry bed.

The third floor (attic) of Zehnder’s , while partially used for storage of dry goods; was set up dormitory style with a row of cots along the wall where the men slept. The residents of the third floor were generally transients and stayed for short periods of time and received room and board as a partial compensation for their work. As a kid, I remember my dad recounting stories of Little Boy Roy, Freddie Becton and Fritz Faerber.

Meals for the men were had at a table in the kitchen meant for them called the “Boarders Table”. That name stuck for years as a place for all of our employees to eat and take breaks.
The second floor of Zehnder’s not only housed the private living quarters of the family but provided small private rooms for long-term, trusted employees. These men were like family and worked in janitorial, general maintenance or in the kitchen. I have vivid memories of some of these men, particularly, George Loll and Carl Knieling.

I spent hours in Carl Knieling’s room. Carl had a short wave radio and I was just amazed as an 8 or 9 year old when he would tune in radio broadcasts from around the world. Additionally, he had a wooden leg as a result of a war injury that was just plain cool to me at the time. The school bus would drop us off in front of the restaurant. My dad’s office was next to Carl’s room, I would say hi to my dad and then see if Carl was there. One day I was bounding up the steps as usual. My dad was in his office and said, “I have some bad news, Carl passed away today.” I remember that like it was yesterday.

George Loll was a tall, very thin, soft spoken man that did a variety of janitorial jobs around the restaurant. The second floor provided a single bathroom with a shower that each of the residents shared. It wasn’t unusual to see the tall, thin, pale George walking down the hall with only a towel wrapped around him to take his turn in the shower.

By the late 1960’s, the demand for office space took priority over any additional guests. Today the second and third floor of our flagship restaurant contains meeting space and offices for our accounting, personnel, IT, front of the house team and various managers.

Over the years, we’ve been blessed with really great members of our team that have given us and our guests great memories. These are really special ones.

Hospitably Yours,

Al Zehnder, CEO of Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth

By Al Zehnder, CEO of Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth

It was 1947 and my grandfather was 66. His sons that were in WWII were home and back in the business. Some worked full time and some had other jobs on the side as the business just couldn’t fully support all of them. They were all interested in the continued success of the business.

It had been 18 years since he and my grandmother opened Zehnder’s on Mother’s Day 1929. They had not only weathered the Great Depression and one of the largest fines levied during Prohibition, but the ups and downs that usually come with any business. After my grandmother passed away in 1941, the day to day grind of running Zehnder’s, fell on his shoulders.

He was ready to hand the business off and the next generation were eager to step into leadership. The official day that the business passed from the first generation to the members of the second generation was March 10, 1947. My dad used to joke that….”on that day we got the business, debts and all.”

I am one of four that make up the third generation of leadership and am proud that six of our children (they’re capable young adults actually) represent the fourth generation and are assuming leadership roles alongside the many excellent non-family managers on our leadership team.

Since our beginning, generations of many families have helped build this great business. We plan on being around a long time.

You have my name on it!
