Iâve often wondered what sparked the discussion for my grandparents to get into the restaurant business. Didnât they see a future in farming? Did they see an opportunity in a vacant building across from what seemed to be a thriving restaurant, Fischerâs Hotel? Maybe they just wanted a change, and at their respective ages, Emilie was 45 and William 47; the time was now. Whatever the reason, by December of 1928, they had purchased the New Exchange Hotel. The family was now in the restaurant business.
The next few months must have been a whirlwind. Selling the farm. Remodel the restaurant. Hire staff. Create a menu. Move the family into the second floor. The business became their home.
Somehow it all came together and on Motherâs Day, May 12, 1929, Zehnderâs opened their doors for business. On that day 312 guests were served for $1.00 each.
This year, May 14th, 2023, marks our 94th year of celebrating Mothers from around the world. Itâs a special day for us. You can view our special Mother’s Day menus here.
Our staff stands ready to make it a special day for you as well. You have my name on it!
