The 20th Annual Fortress Cigar Open was held on October 5, 2017 as the capstone event of the 2017 golf season. The annual golf scramble event includes 18 holes of golf with cart, premium cigars and a special themed dinner prepared by Zehnder’s Executive Chefs....

91 years ago today, The United States repealed the 13-year prohibition of alcohol that spanned from 1920-1933- but did you know that Zehnder`s was involved in one of the largest federal raids launched during the prohibition era?

William and Emilie Zehnder had purchased the New Exchange Hotel just eight years after Prohibition was enacted. Prohibition was a conflict for William in that alcohol, primarily beer, was part of the culture of Frankenmuth. Many businesses, including Zehnder’s and Fischer’s (now the Bavarian Inn) sold alcohol to the “right customers”. Zehnder’s and Fischer’s were raided by Federal agents on July 30, 1930. William and Emilie, along with Herman and Lydia Fischer, were arrested and spent the evening in the Saginaw County Jail. Bond for the Zehnder’s was set at $5,000 (Over $94,500 in 2024) and $8,000 (Over $151,200 in 2024) for the Fischer’s.

The November 12, 1930 issue of the Bay City Times reported that the $8,000 forfeited by the Fischer’s was “the largest ever imposed and collected for a violation of the prohibition law….”

This first photo is from 2005, shortly after we opened the Splash Village Hotel and Water Park. Originally, the park was designed to cater to families with smaller children, but as we continued to grow and develop, we were able to take on massive construction projects including adding new slides, pools, and our glass atrium complete with a retracting ceiling!

Now, nearly 20 years later, we continue to strive for greatness and providing the people of Michigan with an exciting and must-see family vacation destination. As always, we want to thank all of our guests past, present, and future for making this possible!
